Non-economic loss benefit payments

A person can receive non-economic loss benefits if their work-related injury or illness causes a permanent impairment. When calculating this benefit we review the person’s age, type of impairment, and take into account that this person is not just losing wages but also has a permanent physical, functional or psychological injury. A non-economic loss benefit is calculated as a percentage of whole body impairment.

From 2017 to 2018 the total number of people receiving a non-economic loss benefit has increased by 31 per cent. This trend is consistent with the increase in new awards as well as the increase in new lost-time claims.
