To calculate the lost-time injury rate, we look at the number of allowed lost-time claims and the total number of employees to show the number of lost-time claims per 100 employees.
The lost-time injury rate has been increasing since 2016, and increased again by about one per cent from 2018 to 2019. Between 2010 and 2019, the number of people in Schedule 2 covered by the WSIB has increased by approximately eight per cent, while the lost-time injury rate has increased by 10 per cent. In that same period, the no lost-time injury rate has decreased by six per cent.
In 2019, employment covered by the WSIB for Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 firms went up about 3 per cent compared to 2018. Similarly, Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey (LFS) on employment in Ontario showed a 3 per cent increase in employment over the same period.
