Allowed traumatic fatalities by year of death

Unfortunately, every year a number of Ontarians die of a work-related traumatic incident.  Over the past 10 years, 91 per cent of all traumatic fatality claims occurred among males, with the predominant age groups being 45 to 49 years old and 55 to 59 years old. During this period, the construction, transportation and, manufacturing and services sectors account for 76 per cent of these workplace traumatic incidents.

For Schedule 1 employers in 2017, 70 workers lost their lives due to a workplace traumatic fatality.

Over the 10 year period from 2008 to 2017, the following age groups, industry sectors, and gender account for the highest traumatic fatality percentages:

  • Age groups: 45 to 49 (12%), 55 to 59 (12%), 25 to 29 (11%), 35 to 39 (11%), 40 to 44 (11%),

  • Industry sectors: construction (30%), transportation (23%), manufacturing (11%), services (11%)

  • Gender: males (91%)
